Drawing for Learning, Engagement and Enjoyment: An International Conference
7-11 October 2009, London
We are holding an international conference programme, in partnership with the Drawing Research Network,
from 7-10 October 2009, in London, UK. This landmark event is an opportunity for cultural educators (education teams in museums,
galleries and heritage sites), teachers (in formal education and lifelong learning) and artists to come together and explore
drawing as a tool for learning, engagement and enjoyment. It reflects increasing interest in the learning potential of the Campaign’s
flagship programmes, The Big Draw and Power Drawing Professional Development,
from colleagues inside and outside the UK.
This dynamic programme opens with Thinking through Drawing, the Drawing Research Network annual conference. The Drawing Research Network
offers a forum to exchange ideas, communicate news and explore possibilities for collaboration between individuals and institutions involved in drawing research –
for professional practice, education or the promotion of drawing. The conference is a valuable opportunity to hear from eminent practitioners, test out
ideas and network with international colleagues. The programme continues with The Big Draw, a two-day seminar led by Eileen Adams, the Campaign’s
Power Drawing Director. This is a unique chance to gain a greater understanding of how drawing can support learning and engagement with a wide range of
participants in different cultural and educational settings. The seminar will introduce examples, practical activities and planning tools for running a
Big Draw. Coinciding with the Campaign’s tenth birthday celebrations, the programme includes visits to exemplar Big Draw events across London and focused
discussion on engaging adult learners and visitors with museum and gallery collections – through drawing.
Bringing together artists and educators from different countries, Drawing for Learning, Engagement and Enjoyment is an important professional
development opportunity that will allow participants not only to learn, but also to share their own experiences and inspiration.
The conference has the full support of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme. European residents from outside the UK are eligible to apply for
Grundtvig funding to attend. The reference number for
Drawing for Learning, Engagement and Enjoyment is UK-2009-979-001.
